Edgar Allen Poe created Hop Frog in the last year of his life as a response to jealous and rumor mongering female member of his literary circle. This fellow author, rebuffed by Poe earlier in life spread adulterous rumors about Poe and another female member of the literary circle. These rumors created turmoil and difficulties for Poe and in response he took to his pen and wrote this tale of revenge, which was understood by the literary circle as revenge on the rumor mongering female.
